Passport vs CNIC PTA Tax: Which Is Cheaper & Why
Understand the difference between passport and CNIC PTA tax rates and how overseas Pakistanis can save money.

PTA offers two registration rates. The 'passport' rate is a concessionary rate available to overseas Pakistanis who register a device shortly after arriving in the country. The 'CNIC' rate is the standard rate for anyone registering with their national identity card.
Why passport is cheaper
The passport rate is designed to encourage returning overseas Pakistanis and travellers to register the phone they brought with them. On most flagship phones, the passport rate can be PKR 20,000 to 30,000 lower than the CNIC rate.
Who qualifies for the passport rate
You typically qualify if you hold a valid Pakistani passport with a recent international arrival and you register the device within 60 days of entry. Each passport is usually allowed one device on the concessionary rate per specified period.
When you must use CNIC
If you buy an imported phone locally, or you missed the passport window, registration will be at the CNIC rate. Our calculator shows both figures side by side so you always know the gap before you decide.
The passport rate is not the same as the 120-day free window
Overseas Pakistanis often confuse two separate benefits. The 120-day Temporary Mobile Registration lets you use a personal phone on roaming completely free, while the passport rate is a permanent, discounted registration you pay once. You can use the free window first and still register on the cheaper passport rate afterwards, as long as you are still inside the eligible registration period.
What happens if you miss the passport window
There is no retroactive discount. Once the eligible period after your arrival lapses without registering, the device can only be registered at the standard CNIC rate going forward, so it pays to register early rather than wait until the phone is close to being blocked.
